My Family Tree is a set of simple graphic organizers created for young children. It covers 3 generations, without birthdates. If you want to add more family members, such as brothers, sisters, and step-parents, use one of the other blank templates included.
Suggestions for using this set:
•Have a discussion of what makes a “family”. Not all families have a mother, or a father, or grandparents. You may want to spend time with your students so that this topic is comfortable to share with each other. See below*. You may want to make this a part of a more comprehensive unit, and include family members to help out with some names. Dates are optional.
•Make this family tree set into a booklet by using the black and white cover page, “My Family Tree”. Students may decorate with their own drawings (apples, hearts, etc.). Add any of the pages in this set, and create their own labels for topics.
•Cut out the individual trees selecting pages you wish to include in a “shape book”.
•The blank templates can be used for other writing activities with different prompts.
*A family tree can be a traditional or a nontraditional tree, or a mini history of family members. Students many want to include any special people who have lived in their family. Step-parents, foster parents, grandparents, guardians, and any other role models can be part of the family tree.
A family can consist of any loving and caring people that are in a child’s life.
