The four categories are:
• Use one or two describing words (adjectives)
• Use a “how” word (adverb that ends with –ly)
• Use a “where” phrase (adverbial phrase)
• Use a “when” phrase (adverbial phrase)

What exactly is MATH IS REAL LIFE?

Math IS Real Life is a monthly blog link-up hosted by a math loving dork! The purpose of #MIRL is to bring examples of how I (and others who link up) have used math in OUR real lives in the last month. The hosted link-up is the first Wednesday of each month and often have other friends and math bloggers join in the fun!

You can check out our Pinterest boards HERE to read archived posts, grab real-world ideas/ pictures and even some freebies to use in your classroom.

This particular freebie goes along with the July 2014 edition of Math IS Real Life that will be live on 7/2/2014. Make sure to check out the link-up . . . feel free to join in too!

This freebie includes a real world serving size scenario in which students will need to determine how many different ways they can create 4 equal servings given the same starting cake. This product is meant to be used at many levels and it is up to the teacher's discretion as to how deep to dig with his/her students. I highly suggest using this activity to open up a mathematical discourse in your classroom. I think you might be surprised at how deep your students can go with this! Also, make sure to try it on your own before looking at the key (only a few of the possible answers listed!)

FREE MATH LESSON - “CCSS 3.NBT.2 Addition Mix-and-Match Task Card Sampler”

This sampler is part of my Arithmetic Picnic task card set. This sampler includes 15 task cards and 5 heading cards. The cards cover addition word problems, reading number words, and base ten block representation.

Students work together to locate three cards that all share the same
answer on a heading card.

These cards work great for small groups, centers, and head band activities. They are a nice break from traditional seat work.

These cards were designed to meet CCSS 3.NBT.2. They would
also work well towards the end of the 2nd grade year.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “DRA 28 Non-Fiction Written Retell Practice Form”

This is a form you can use to have your students practice completing the written retell for the DRA 28. I find sometimes it's not that my students don't know the answers to the questions on the written retell portion of the assessment, but that the form is unfamiliar and that causes them some trouble with passing the written portion of the test. This is a generic for for practicing the DRA questions using any nonfiction text you may be working on during guided reading. I generally preprogram the summary headers for my students, and make a text specific Literal Comprehension Question, and Interpretation question for students to answer along with this worksheet.
