FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “{FREE!} Persuasive Writing Prompts”

Here are 24 thought-provoking prompts to jump-start persuasive writing. The Common Core standards put a strong emphasis on persuasive writing skills. These prompts allow students to experiment with a variety of types of writing with a common purpose.

Print on card stock, laminate, and cut apart and you're ready to use these in a variety of ways! I've used them in my own classroom successfully in a few different ways:

•daily "do now" at the start of writing workshop
•independent center activity during writing or ELA
•resource for reluctant or "stuck" writers.
•prompt for writing homework
•pre- and post-assessment prompt before and after teaching persuasive writing unit
•straight-forward and valuable activity to leave in your sub-tub!

I've designed these prompts to be appropriate for different types of use--you could use them in a "quick-write" format, or to help students generate ideas for longer-term writing projects that they will bring through the writing cycle. These open-ended prompts are appropriate for a wide range of grade levels and abilities.

FREE MISC. LESSON - “The Good Samaritan FREEBIE”

This 7 page freebie about "The Good Samaritan" requires students to read the Bible passage from Luke 10:25-37 . After reading the passage, students will answer the questions on each page. There is a graphic at the top of each page and then one question/direction at the bottom with a line(s) for students to write the answer. Students may also color the picture.

What exactly do insects eat? What are bees looking for when they fly from flower to flower? Students compare and contrast insect mouth parts and understand that an insects food is related to its type of mouth part. Everyday items are used to give students an understanding of how an insect eats. Students draw four insects bee, fly, mosquito and using easy to follow step-by-step illustrations. Students illustrate the book themselves by using basic drawing and cutting skills. This is a great supplement to your thematic Insect unit! How to draw a bee, an ant, a mosquito, and a fly are included in this unit.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “FREE Digital Persuasive Language Worksheets”

By the time students get to middle school, or even high school, they usually know the names of persuasive language techniques. However, they still need to practice identifying and explaining them in use. These FREE worksheets will help facilitate that process.

Contents:

20 Techniques of Persuasive Language: This one-slide informational resource covers twenty common techniques of persuasion found in advertising, propaganda and persuasive speeches and writing. It is useful for students to keep in their notebooks.

Identifying Persuasive Techniques in Advertizing: This activity puts students’ knowledge of persuasive language to the test by requiring them to identify how techniques are used in extracts from advertisements. This is a great way for students to see the ‘everyday’ usage of these concepts.

Identifying Persuasive Techniques in a Political Speech: This exercise focuses on an extract from Winston Churchill’s speech “Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat”. Students are required to read the extract and then complete the table, identifying the effects of the different techniques.

Using Persuasive Techniques: This activity requires students to put their knowledge into action by writing their own persuasive sentences with the use of persuasive language techniques.
