FREE MATH LESSON - “Make Your Own Bar Graph: Turn Off the Television!”

by The Teacher Treasury
3rd - 4th Grade

Materials Needed: 1 sheet of graph paper (per student)

Directions: Use the chart below to make your own bar graph on graph paper. Make sure you double check your answers!!!

Lesson: Eric Miller watches WAY too much television! He watches TV every day after school. Sometimes he watches less television because he goes outside to play with his friends or because he has a lot of homework. Use the chart below to answer the following questions and create your own bar graph.

Students are then asked the following questions:

1. What day did Eric watch the most television?

2. What day did he watch television the least?

3. What two days did he watch the same amount of television?

4. How many more hours of television did Eric watch on Sunday than on Wednesday?

5. How many more hours of television did Eric watch on Friday than on Monday?

This can either be used as a morning warm-up, math warm-up, homework, in-class practice or quiz.

Hope this helps =)

Unique! Effective! Enjoyable! Easy to use! Kids love this activity because they get to move around, and it is actually a great way to develop the important reading strategy of sequencing events. There is a physicality to it that helps children who have difficulty conceptualizing events in time. The set includes 28 correctly numbered events from Strega Nona in both Numbered and Unnumbered formats. Starred* events can be eliminated, depending on class size.
