FREE MATH LESSON - “Place Value: Sprint to 100 game center”

4 game boards with different graphics in a racing theme.

Here is a game I play with my class when they are ready to move from using cubes and bundling sticks to getting used to base-10 materials.

Students roll a die (0-9 works well, but a 6-sided die in fine OR shuffle and turn over the number cards from a deck). Students add that many ones to their board in the ones place. They continue to take turns and adding one's until they can change 10 ones for 1 ten and finally 10 tens for 1 hundred.

FREE MISC. LESSON - “Positive Phrases for Teachers”

After my first year in the classroom, I decided I was tired of yelling and screaming at my students to listen to me. I put together this list of phrases to use whenever students' behaviors were inappropriate and once I started using them, I noticed my students acting much more appropriately and arguing with me less. The phrases are worded in "I language" (i.e. instead of "Stop arguing with me!" I would say "I care too much about class learning to argue with you"). I had them on my clipboard, which I carried around the room with me, and whenever I would get frustrated, I would look down and use one of the phrases. These made a huge difference in my ability to manage my classroom and before I knew it, I wasn't yelling or screaming at my students anymore.

Drama Circle - A Fairy Tale Drama Circle

This free drama activity with a Fairy Tale theme has a similar format to the "I Have / Who Has" game. This is a fun activity cooperative learning activity to practice drama, listening, or oral language skills. There are 32 cards, that follow in a sequence, with each card having a different instruction. Students assemble in a circle to perform their scenarios. As each student finishes acting out his or her card, the student with the next card in the sequence starts acting out his or her card. The game continues until the last card is acted out.
