Want a super quick and easy positive behavior strategy that can be done with very little preparation or effort and that has the potential to be extremely effective? If so, this is the strategy for you! It’s so simple that you may not realize it's even a strategy, BUT IT IS. This is an unconventional positive behavior strategy because this particular behavior strategy is for YOU, not your students. Your students, however, will be the ones who benefit from you using this strategy!
Research shows that for every time we give negative feedback to a student, we need to give the student four positive feedbacks. It’s the 4:1 ratio used by behavior experts when striving to improve a student’s behavior. While every student does not always need this 4:1 ratio, students who have challenging behaviors are the ones who tend to need it the most! The reason is simple: They are the students getting the most negative feedback, and since negative feedback is still ATTENTION, students may unknowingly continue to misbehave in order to be noticed and get a reaction from the teacher.
