FREE MATH LESSON - “FREE Math Puzzles Building Algebraic Equations Using Positive, Negative Numbers”

by Scipi - Science and Math
6th - 9th Grade

This FREE math resource includes three ready to print task cards to practice building and creating equations while using mental math, computation, analytical skills and problem solving. Each task card contains different math puzzles which vary in difficulty from easy to challenging. There is one easy puzzle, one medium level puzzle and one challenging puzzle; so, you can differentiate by choosing the level of difficulty appropriate for each student. Positive and negative numbers are used.

Each math puzzle is a square divided into four parts with a circle in the middle of the square. Each math puzzle contains four numbers, one in each corner of the square, with the answer in the circle. Using the four numbers, (each number must be used once) the student is to construct an equation that equals the answer contained in the circle. Students may use all four signs of operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) or just one or two. Additionally, each sign of operation may be used more than once. Parenthesis may be needed to create a true equation, and the Order of Operations (PEMDAS) must be followed. Complete directions and answers are included in the resource.

The complete 18 task card set is available at:

Do you want this same type of puzzle, but only ones that use positive numbers? Try this resource.

FREE MATH LESSON - “Coloring Page Problem Solving FREE SAMPLE Parts & Wholes, WODB, How Many More”

by Math Viking
Kindergarten - 2nd Grade

FREE PROBLEM SOLVING COLORING TASKS for (late) kindergarten, first and second grade. Introducing part whole models? Teaching comparison? Start the day with an appropriate coloring task BEFORE the lesson and see what happens! These engaging coloring pages make great bell ringers, transition tasks and of course, math centers. These math coach created coloring pages allow less confident learners time to think and reason without stress and give the most confident learners something to work on.

(And of course they are a huge help to busy teachers who would love to start the day with something stress-free yet worthwhile.

INCLUDES:

  • 7 Coloring Page Problem Solving Tasks

WODB

"20 is the answer. What is the question?"

How many in all?

How many are hiding?

How many more?

WHY:

  • Coloring has been proven to relax the mind.
  • This is a great way to begin the day or the class with 100% independence.
  • The coloring aspect allows less confident learners time to think and reason without stress.
  • It also gives the most confident learners something to work on.
  • Age appropriate pictures support context, which is essential for problem solving.
  • Pictures provide support for the text and when needed, the quantity.
  • Pictures are representational. This is essential in the move from concrete to abstract thinking.
  • Concrete items and pictures in tandem with part whole models can be very powerful.
  • Many little learners need MORE experiences with problem solving than busy teachers have time to provide- especially with missing parts!
  • Engagement increases the desire to understand.

I initially created my Which One Doesn't Belong coloring pages to CALM DOWN the transition from lunch time to math time. I was thrilled with how well they worked and BLOWN AWAY by the level of reasoning and engagement. I went back to work and created the problem solving packs to continue the fun and thinking.

I feel they work best all mixed up! After doing 5 days of problem solving, try 5 days of WODB and then a week of "What is the question?" before you mix them all up as randomly as you like!
