FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Service Project: Prison Library Book and Money Drive”

by Spark Creativity
6th - 12th Grade

In this packet, you’ll find posters you can print and use to help your students to have their own book and money drive for a prison library project.

You can find information on the type and quality of books requested in most prisons, plus an extensive list of projects in different areas of the country here. Let students find the one they want to work with, or contact local prisons and ask if they can donate books.

If you’d like to include a research element to help your students be better informed, you can find a lot of wonderful articles and resources from the Prison Policy Initiative.

IMPORTANT: If the organization you choose to work with is not within driving distance, and you do not find a local youth detention center, jail, or prison that will accept your books, then just collect money to send.
