FREE MATH LESSON - “CUBES Problem Solving Strategies FREEBIE”

by EduTunes With Miss Jenny
Kindergarten - 12th Grade

This "CUBES" Problem Solving Strategies FREEBIE gives children tools for solving math problems. The posters support the first K-12 Common Core Standard for Mathematical Practice, which states, "Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them."
I've included three versions of the poster with changes to the meaning of the "E" (see below). All three versions are in full-color and black-and-white. CUBES is a mneumonic for:
C: Circle the numbers.
U: Underline the question.
B: Box the key words.
E: Explain your thinking/eliminate unnecessary information/evaluate next steps.
S: Solve the problem.
Rather than seeing CUBES as a "formula," I tell my students that it is a helpful way to break down problems. Math requires a tremendous amount of cognitive load--to the point that many students feel too overwhelmed to even try. This simple system is a great way to make solving difficult math problems accessible to those students. I sincerely hope this work makes a difference in your classroom. Thanks so much for trying my materials!
Sincerely,
Jenny Kramer
