The order of operations for math expressions and equations can be a challenge to memorize. Mnemonics are often used to help students remember the rules. The first letters of words represent various operations. Different countries use different mnemonics.
- The United States uses PEMDAS and GEMDAS. They stand for Parentheses/Grouping, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction.
- Canada and New Zealand use BEDMAS, which stands for Brackets, Exponents, Division/Multiplication, Addition/Subtraction.
- The UK, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Australia use BODMAS meaning Brackets, Order, Division/Multiplication, Addition/Subtraction. Nigeria and some other West African countries also use BODMAS. The UK also uses BIDMAS, standing for Brackets, Indices, Division/Multiplication, Addition/Subtraction.
