FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Free Science of Reading Alphabet Slides & Page Speech to Print Letter Formation”

by Lessons for Little Ones by Tina O'Block
Pre-Kindergarten - 1st Grade

This free sample from my Science of Reading Alphabet Slides & Pages money-saving bundle provides effective and fun phonics and handwriting instruction based on Science of Reading research. They go from speech to print, and help your preschool, kindergarten, or first grade students learn or review the letter Dd sound, letter Dd name, and letter Dd formation using a multisensory approach.

Your students will love the variety of activities and movements in the alphabet slides which help them connect their speech sounds to how those sounds are represented in print. They will build phoneme-grapheme correspondence essential to learning to read and decode words efficiently in an engaging way.

You will love how easy it is to have an effective phonics lesson for introduction or review - simply show and go! No cards to hold or print, large visuals for all students to view, and they can easily be used in conjunction with your sound wall or alphabet cards.

The coordinating printable alphabet page extends the learning, gives students practice tracing and writing the letter, and can be used for practice or assessment.

Multisensory, Interactive Learning: Students engage multiple senses with activities and movements that teach letter sounds, letter names, and proper letter formation.

Aligned with Science of Reading Speech to Print Approach: The alphabet slides and pages incorporate research-based practices that help students make the crucial connection between the sounds they hear and how those sounds are represented in print.

Real Student Mouth Photos & Images in the Alphabet Slides: Real photos help your young students connect learning to their everyday experiences, making lessons more meaningful.

You receive:

  • Slide decks for Google Slides and PowerPoint for the Letter Dd
  • Printable Instructional Guide - Detailed directions explain mouth formations for each sound, whether it's voiced or unvoiced, continuous or a stop sound, answer keys for each slide, plus verbal instructions for proper letter formation.
  • Alphabet worksheet with answer key for Letter Dd

What is included in the no-prep phonics lesson alphabet slides deck?

Each alphabet slide deck provides a complete phonics lesson that goes from speech to print and focuses on letter sounds, letter names (recognition), and letter formation.

Slide 1: Introduce the sound to the students and have them repeat it. There is an optional audio file included in the upper left corner of the slide. Click to listen. It says the sound and keyword picture.

Slide 2: Mouth formation – Use the provided printable guide to describe what your tongue, lips, and teeth are doing when saying the sound, if the sound is voiced or unvoiced, and if the airflow is continuous or a stop sound.

Ask students the questions from the Guide/Answer Key.

Slide 3: Keyword picture - Say the name of the keyword picture, using beginning sound isolation (pronounce the first phoneme in a word, then say the whole word).  You can say something similar to “/a/, /a/, apple”. Have students repeat. Explain that the sound is at the beginning of the keyword. Isolating the beginning sound helps students understand that words are made up of a series of sounds. The keyword picture acts as a memory aid.

Slides 4-8Find matching beginning sounds (beginning sound isolation, sound discrimination) - Tell students that they are now going to listen for the sound at the beginning of different words. You are going to show them pictures of objects. If the picture name begins with the sound, they are going to show a “thumbs up”. If the picture name does not begin with the sound, they are going to show a “thumbs down”.

Please note: For the letter Xx slides, students will listen for the /x/ sound at the end of the picture name (word).

Slides 9-13: Where in the word is the sound? - Students say the name of the picture. If they hear the sound at the beginning, they place both hands on their heads.

If they hear the sound in the middle, they place both hands on their hips.

If they hear the sound at the end, they touch their toes.

This helps students better discriminate the sound, segment sounds, and understand that words are made up of individual sounds.

Slide 14: Shows how the sound is represented in print - Point out the difference between the capital letter and the lowercase letter. Point to each letter and have students say the sound.

Slides 15-16: Animated gif images that show letter formation - Refer to the Guide/Answer Key for letter formation verbal directions.

Then, have students air-write each letter and say the sound.

Doing the muscle movements and writing the letters leaves a muscle memory in the sensorimotor part of the brain which helps students recognize letters. It also helps children better recognize the unique properties of each letter.

The alphabet page includes the following:

Section 1: Students tap the dot and say the name of the keyword picture, focusing on the beginning sound.

Section 2: Students circle or color the pictures of objects that begin with that same sound.

Section 3: Students circle the correct mouth formation picture and whether or not the sound is voiced or unvoiced (they can place their hands on their throats while saying the sound to see if it vibrates).

Section 4: Handwriting Practice - Students trace the letters saying the sound each time. Students write the letters beginning at the dot guides and say the sound each time. Writing the letters leaves a muscle memory in the sensorimotor part of the brain which helps students recognize letters. It also helps children better recognize the unique properties of each letter.

Section 5: Students say and trace the words, then circle where they hear/see the sound (beginning, middle, end).

Download the money-saving bundle here and have no-prep Science of Reading alphabet slides plus coordinating alphabet pages for all 26 letters of the alphabet (2 sets of slides & pages for each vowel)!

FREE MISC. LESSON - “2nd Grade Social Emotional Learning Journal - SEL JOURNAL Week 1 - FREE SAMPLE”

by Rockin Resources
2nd Grade

FREE SAMPLE of our 2nd Grade Social Emotional Learning Journal. Try Week 1 for free!

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE YEAR-LONG SEL JOURNAL IN THE LINK ABOVE OR SEE BELOW:

This SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING journal with Casel Framework covers all 5 CASEL COMPETENCIES. To take students confidently through the school year, each of the 5 competencies are scaffolded and repeated 7 times to provide 35 weeks of social emotional learning opportunities. This SEL journal writing helps students build confidence and empathy.

It is perfect for morning work to start off the day on the right foot! DIGITAL NOW AVAILABLE- PDF, GOOGLE, AND POWERPOINT INCLUDED!

COMPETENCIES:

  1. Self-Awareness
  2. Self-Management
  3. Social Awareness
  4. Relationship Skills
  5. Decision-Making

THERE IS A CHOICE OF TWO COVER PAGES FOR JOURNALS.

6-PRONGED APPROACH INCLUDES:

1.  DAILY CHECK IN:

Teachers can gain a sense of where students are emotionally each day to determine if there is something the teacher needs to discuss with that student.

2.  MINDFUL MINUTE:

Practical daily strategies for coping and calming. These vary. Some are the same throughout the week. Others change daily.

3.  SCAFFOLDED SEL VOCABULARY:

The vocabulary helps students develop the necessary words to express themselves. It increases vocabulary consciousness through encountering, engaging, and applying context via definition, sentence, synonym and ‘What does the word make me think of?’ There is one vocabulary word per week that is aligned to that competency. Each CASEL competency vocabulary word progresses/builds upon each previous competency cycle. i.e.- Look at Decision-Making and see how the vocabulary progresses with each cycle. The vocabulary is consistent in content across grades 2-6 with different words aligned to the reading level (based on a book, Children's Writer's Word Book by Alijandra Mogilner that levels words).

  • VOCABULARY SENTENCE:  There is a sample of a sentence in the teacher notes.

  • SYNONYM: For some words, you may want students (or use for differentiation) to find antonyms too.

  • WHAT DOES THE WORD MAKE ME THINK OF?: This can be anything that comes to mind. It can be shared in a discussion.

WORD WALL and STUDY CARDS are also included!

4.  TODAY I CAN:

The “I Can” statements are practical, ‘doable’ and aligned with CASEL 'I Can' ideals. (Many districts require teachers to write the daily 'I Can' 'standards' on the board. Often, they 'sound good' but lack practicality for students. Our 'I Can' statements combine realistic things students can do AND general goal statements. They will mean something to students.

There is overlap across grade levels with 'I Can' statements. This both reinforces previous years' 'I Can' tasks but also introduces different/higher level ones that have been tweaked.

These can be used for discussion. Some have a quick written answer while others have a place to check off for completion or understanding. When checking off for completion, it may need to be checked off at the end of the day or before they start the next day. You might also want to set guidelines to meet your classroom dynamics for some of them. For example- Sit next to someone who is lonely. – You might want to designate a time- at lunch or free time.

5.  WHAT COULD I DO:

This section gives students situations to think about how they would react. They were chosen for practical and thought-provoking analysis.

6.  REFLECTION:

VISUAL:  The illustration doesn’t have to be specific. It can symbolize the statement. For example-  I can promise myself to not make the same mistake twice. Students can draw a promise sign and the number 2.

WRITTEN:  Practical and thought-provoking reflection prompts to increase students' comprehension and transformation.

WHAT IS THE CASEL FRAMEWORK?

A framework creates a foundation for applying evidence-based SEL strategies to the community. The “CASEL wheel” helps cultivate skills and environments that advance students’ learning and development.

Use the framework to:

  • Foster knowledge, skills, and attitudes across five areas of social and emotional competence;
  • Establish equitable learning environments and coordinate practices across four key settings that support students’ social, emotional, and academic development.

BEFORE YOU START:

These are meant to do in the morning, first thing, like DOL or Math Minutes, etc.

Remind students that there are no right or wrong answers. It is to help them grow socially and emotionally. If you need to grade it, it can be for completion.

THANK YOU FOR VISITING MY STORE!

Keep rockin' it!
