Tips and tricks on how to use these cards in the classroom:
•When introducing the 5E Model to your class, hand out both the Teacher Role in the 5E Model and the Student Role in the 5E Model cards to all teams. Instruct students to look over the cards and make a T-Chart. The left side is the Teacher Role and the right side is the Student Role. Each team will generate a list of both Teacher and Student Roles in the 5E Model. Once the T-Chart has been created, ask the Team Reporter (see our Lab Team Role Cards here) to present their findings to the class.
•Clarify any unknown words or phrases within the 5E Model. For most students, this will be a new way of learning. It will take patience on both the teacher and student part as you learn this most awesome model together. Give each other grace as you learn.
•Hang up the Role cards in the classroom to act as anchor charts. As students get used to this new model, they will want to refer to these cards when needing clarification.
•Once you have reviewed the roles both teacher and student will play in the 5E Model. Introduce the sample lesson schedule, so students will know what to expect each week. Again, post this in class to act as an anchor chart for both you and your students.
•Explicit instruction in the 5E Model upfront will save you tons of time and frustration during the year. Believe us, your future self with thank you.
