FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “The Noun-Maker Suffix Charades”

by Two Pencils and a Book
4th - 10th Grade

Make noun suffixes, morphology, and word study active and memorable with this printable Suffix Charades Game for Grades 5–9! Students build nouns from base words, identify the correct noun-making suffix, explain how the word changed, and act out the completed noun. This engaging activity includes 50 charades cards, student supports, a recording sheet, and a complete answer key.

The Noun Maker Suffix Charades Game gives students meaningful practice with suffixes while strengthening vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and morphological awareness. Instead of simply memorizing suffix meanings, students apply what they know by combining a base word with an appropriate suffix and using the meaning of the completed noun during a game of charades.

Students may work with suffixes such as:

-ment, -ness, -tion, -sion, -er, -or, -ist, -ian, -ee, -ity, -ty, -ship, -hood, -dom, -ery, -ism, -ology, and more.

What Is Included?

  • 50 printable base-word charades cards
  • Five card sets with 10 cards per page
  • One-page student suffix reference chart
  • Detailed teacher guide
  • Student directions
  • Noun-building recording sheet
  • Complete answer key for all 50 cards
  • Suggested charade ideas
  • Suffix meanings and word-building explanations
  • Spelling-change notes for teacher support

How the Game Works

Students draw a base-word card, choose a suffix that changes the word into a noun, and record the completed word. They then act out the noun silently while classmates try to guess it. After the word is revealed, students identify the suffix and explain how it helped form the noun.

Skills Practiced

Students practice:

Building nouns from base words

Recognizing noun-making suffixes

Understanding suffix meanings

Applying spelling changes

Identifying parts of speech

Explaining word relationships

Developing academic vocabulary

Using morphology to determine word meaning

Communicating through movement and discussion

This resource is especially helpful for upper elementary, middle school, intervention, special education, and English learner classrooms. The colorful but age-respectful format makes suffix practice engaging without feeling too young for older students.
