Your kids will love this Geometry Treasure Hunt. In the spirit of mathematical adventure you will give your class the mission of finding geometric patterns by exploring your school. It is relevant and engaging while students practice teamwork and collaboration.
Under your direction, student pairs or small groups will travel around your school looking for examples of geometry in authentic settings. They find it, sketch it, and tell its main purpose (design, structure, or symbol). Follow-up questions give the opportunity to write about math.
This is a great activity for reinforcing math vocabulary after you have introduced these geometric terms. You will love how the class collaborates, interacts, and applies reasoning and writing skills.
Set the parameters for where the groups/pairs can search. If you let them spread out, have some TAs or volunteers act as guides so that everyone knows the rules of place, purpose, and acceptable voice levels.
OPTION: You can provide some small item or treat when they’ve completed their search. No matter what the expectation is, your students will enjoy MATHEMATIZING!
