FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Writing a Summary-- FREEBIE!”

by Pirate Queen Teaching Treasures
3rd - 5th Grade

Want to inspire your students to read and learn to write effective summaries? Then give this freebie a try!

Edward and the Pirate by David McPhail is a charming story about a boy who loves to read. And when he reads, he becomes so wrapped up in the story that he sees himself as one of the characters!

After reading this inspiring book to your students, have them think about books they have read that seem to come to life in the reader’s imagination. Then have students write a summary of a favorite scene, or event, from the story using the SWBSTF (Someone, Wanted, But, So, Then, Finally) format. Next, students draw an illustration of the scene. When completed, have students share their summaries and drawings. Post the work on a wall to inspire reading throughout the year!

Product includes:
• Student Objectives
• Common Core Standards
• Teaching Tips
• SWBSTF Summary Flow Chart
• Summary Final Copy Sheet
• Illustration Sheet
• Samples of flow chart, summary, and illustration

Thank you for choosing this product.
